Thursday 24th March 2011 saw the Get Going, Get Rowing North East final and from what we hear it was an excellent event. Congradulations sould be given to the five competitors who broke records at the event, so well done to A Thornton - Ryton, N Dalby - Sacred Heart, Millie Dickinson - Queen Elizabeth, A McCarthy - Kingsmeadow, R Laidler - Heaton Manor. - Arnold Hill School - Race The Sun
We organise an event called 'Race the Sun' which is the result of a member of our PE department entering the Action Medical Research sponsored event which challenges teams to Run, Canoe and Cycle as far as they can during the hours of daylight. - Megan Jephcote
In October 2008 Megan joined the Ross Rowing Junior Academy. She enjoyed the on-water training and took part in the the Welsh National Indoor Rowing Championships in December 2008. This report provides an evaluation of the Rowers in Schools project a year after it began in nineteen secondary schools in North East Essex in February 2009. As a result of participating in the Primary Specialism Physical Education Pilot, Cullercoats Primary School was loaned five Concept2 Rowing machines for use both club activities and in lesson time. All of the staff took part in a training session to allow non specialist teachers to use them in an efficient manner. This motivated the staff greatly and years 3- 6 have been using them over the two years that we have had them. We now have only one year left with them and we are becoming concerned about the void that they will leave when they a returned. - Willow Brook Primary School
In September 2004 Concept 2 staff approached Willow Brook at Keyworth, to run the first ever pilot indoor rowing scheme in a primary school. So how has it worked with the younger children? In 2006, Concept 2 was involved in a most successful pilot scheme to bring indoor rowing to primary pupils in four inner city schools in the St.Ann's area of Nottingham. The Concept 2 team spent a day in each school, setting up 12 indoor rowers and the technology to link them to a giant screen showing races in progress. Following the enthusiastic reaction to this event, Concept 2 Education Team have set up a longer-term study at Willow Brook Primary School in Keyworth, Notts. - Redwood Rows Round The World (Twice!!!!)
As part of the celebration day events at Redwood on Friday 3rd July students across all key stages were challenged to row around the world on our five Concept2 rowing machines. Students could pop in and out of the challenge as and when they liked and as many times as they wanted. It did not matter if they rowed 1 meter or 1000 meters as they were rowing to the same destinations collectively as one team. - 5X60 Programme Helps Raise Money For Ysgol Tre-Gib School

An innovative pilot scheme between the Tony Blair Sports Foundation and the North East Strategic Health Authority was launched today (30th April) to tackle childhood obesity and other health conditions through rowing. - North London Rowshows
Building on the successes of a similar (smaller!) project in 2008, the North London Competition Managers, in association with their SSP's planned a series of 'Rowshows' across the 4 North London Boroughs of Barnet, Enfield, Haringey and Waltham Forest. The aim was to deliver 10 Rowshows in secondary schools over 2 weeks in each borough. Therefore an 8-week project targeting 40 schools. Each school pupil would be participating in an intra-school competition, leading into a Borough inter-school virtual league competition. The indoor rowing machines have been used as part of the schools weight loss programme to increase and monitor physical activity. The Pilgrim Centre's aim is to use sport to motivate pupils aged 9 - 14 who are struggling with their study or who have become disillusioned by traditional learning styles. The centre has developed a healthy living session which incorporates physical exercise linked with ICT applications. We identified Concept2 rowing machines and RowPro software as meeting these needs and delivering a wow factor. The Teaching Primary Care Trust in the Heart of Birmingham area put machines into primary and secondary schools in the Birmingham area with the aim of raising awareness of fitness and tackling obesity with pupils from a young age. Redwood school competed against many other schools at this years English Indoor Rowing Championship in Manchester. "This culminated in us receiving a special award at the closing presentation in recognition of our pupils outstanding effort and performance. Newcastle Schools Sport Partnership (NSSP*) is supplying students in Newcastle city schools with rowing machines to improve their competitive edge, fitness and interest in the sport. "Students get fit and by competing against each other in their teams, gain respect for the abilities of others and raise their own sporting standards." - Sutherland Primary School
The club offers children, aged 9-11, a structured indoor rowing experience and 'healthy lifestyle' coaching. We have had fantastic success with some of our targeted pupils, in particular those pupils identified as 'over weight'. By introducing them to indoor rowing as part of a balanced programme of 'healthy living', we have successfully and significantly improved their 'wellbeing'. - Lordswood School
The Lordswood School in Birmingham have been using their rowing machines to make Maths and ICT lessons more enjoyable and practical for pupils. Maths teachers and PE staff combined parts of their curriculum by using PE time to do fitness testing, which in turn were used in Maths and ICT lessons to understand the Speed, Distance and Time relationship. - Al-Hijrah Secondary School
Pupils in the Al-Hijrah Secondary School in Birmingham used the Concept2 rowing machines to do a virtual Hajj row. The lesson resources and online guide gives pupils the opportunity to understand the Hajj, mirror the events of the Hajj and row for equivalent distances. The Hajj is a yearly event and will take place at the start December this year. - Frankley Community High School
Frankley Community High School situated on the outskirts of Birmingham is a relatively small school with just under 500 pupils on register ranging from years 7-11. Since the introduction of the Concept2 indoor rowing machines in Nov 2006 the PE DEPT has seen a noticeable positive effect in PE lesson/KS4 girls PE lessons and extra curricular participation levels. - Effects of a classroom-based program on physical activity and on-task behaviour
There is little evidence on the positive benefits physical activity can have on improving children's concentration, mental cognition and academic performance. The aim of this study therefore was to examine the effects of a classroom based physical activity program on young children's activity levels and on-task behaviour during academic instruction time. - St Philip's: The Introduction of indoor rowing in a school for children with special educational needs.
St Philip's is a school for children with moderate learning difficulties (MLD) located in Chessington Surrey. We are a local authority funded school and at the time of writing have 125 students on role. These pupils have in line with similar schools a significant range of needs and performance levels. As part of the school we have a autistic unit and provision for children with severe learning difficulties as well as a 6th form. - London Youth Rowing Community Projects
London Youth Rowing is a major sports initiative which brings together the resources of the Federation of London Youth Clubs and the Royal Albert Dock Trust to launch a community based rowing programme, the first such activity with plans to operate across the whole of Greater London. - Nottingham City Schools IRC
On Tuesday 23rd January the Nottingham School Sport Partnership held its first City Indoor Rowing Championships for primary school children. Highfield have had two rowers for just a few months and the whole thing has really taken off. There is a group of 20 pupils coming in as early as 7.30am in the morning to row these are pupils that do not take part in clubs or teams. - Biddenham Upper School

I have followed with interest the success of the Birmingham Schools Indoor Rowing Project, sponsored by the Sir Steve Redgrave Trust.
