Sandwell Indoor Rowing Project
Focus - This case study will focus on the competition element of our project.
Background
- Established 2006 with between 2 and 6 C.2 machines in every secondary school.
- 2 lead venues are SSP Hubs, Wood Green High School COSMAC and Oldbury College of Sport.
- League established across whole authority at KS3 & 4 to include 2 special schools.
Currently
2008 league restructured to make it more manageable - based on 'Mini Bus League' principle
- Reduces travel time and costs
- Competitions from year 7-11 contribute to overall league
- Tied into National competition framework
- Used for Talent ID
- No waiting around to compete as in multi year events
- Provides further opportunities for young leaders who support Competition Manager
- Appointment of project co-ordinator funded via Community Coaches Programme County Sport Partnership. 1 day a week to drive project on.
- Data from events used by schools e.g in Maths lessons, as part of training programmes for GCSE.
Next Steps
- Externally funded 14-19 evening project
- Use of virtual competition
- Use of 'Fish' and 'Golf' within new consoles to bolster individual and team competition
- Further training 26 February - a menu of awards for Adults and Young Leaders as well as Teaching staff
What have we learnt?
- Needs someone to drive project authority wide.
- Must have named contact in each school.
- 'Mini Bus' concept is a way forward.
- Involvement has been from a wide range of students, many of which have not participated in any representative school competition/sport/activity before.
- DO NOT operate C2 as a bolt on. In Sandwell C2 is integrated into Authority strategy, School SOW, SSP and competition framework.
- Support from C2 both online and in person is excellent.
Above All
When young people are introduced to the 'Venue Race Software' (Downloadable and FREE) it provides a real impetus for competition for individuals and teams.
