- NE Essex PCT - Report On Rowers In Schools
This report provides an evaluation of the Rowers in Schools project a year after it began in nineteen secondary schools in North East Essex in February 2009. An innovative pilot scheme between the Tony Blair Sports Foundation and the North East Strategic Health Authority was launched today (30th April) to tackle childhood obesity and other health conditions through rowing. - North London Rowshows
Building on the successes of a similar (smaller!) project in 2008, the North London Competition Managers, in association with their SSP's planned a series of 'Rowshows' across the 4 North London Boroughs of Barnet, Enfield, Haringey and Waltham Forest. The aim was to deliver 10 Rowshows in secondary schools over 2 weeks in each borough. Therefore an 8-week project targeting 40 schools. Each school pupil would be participating in an intra-school competition, leading into a Borough inter-school virtual league competition. The Pilgrim Centre's aim is to use sport to motivate pupils aged 9 - 14 who are struggling with their study or who have become disillusioned by traditional learning styles. The centre has developed a healthy living session which incorporates physical exercise linked with ICT applications. The Teaching Primary Care Trust in the Heart of Birmingham area put machines into primary and secondary schools in the Birmingham area with the aim of raising awareness of fitness and tackling obesity with pupils from a young age. The Lordswood School in Birmingham have been using their rowing machines to make Maths and ICT lessons more enjoyable and practical for pupils. Maths teachers and PE staff combined parts of their curriculum by using PE time to do fitness testing, which in turn were used in Maths and ICT lessons to understand the Speed, Distance and Time relationship. - Al-Hijrah Secondary School
Pupils in the Al-Hijrah Secondary School in Birmingham used the Concept2 rowing machines to do a virtual Hajj row. The lesson resources and online guide gives pupils the opportunity to understand the Hajj, mirror the events of the Hajj and row for equivalent distances. The Hajj is a yearly event and will take place at the start December this year. - Highfield High School

I have followed with interest the success of the Birmingham Schools Indoor Rowing Project, sponsored by the Sir Steve Redgrave Trust.
