Heart of Birmingham - Indoor Rowing in Primary and Secondary Schools

To gain an understanding of current usage of the indoor rowers that were supplied as part of the indoor rowing for schools initiative, HOBt PCT sent out questionnaires for January 2006 to August 2007. The results are as follows;
Primary School Data (Years 5-6)
- 77% of HOB schools have taken part in the rowing machine in schools initiative, and out of a population of around 13919 students it is estimated that approximately 9604 students are using the machines.
Based on a sample of schools;
- 69% of students have used the rowers.
- The average length of time students are using the rowers for is 9 minutes and there has been around 9 rowing sessions per term.
- 58% of year groups are using the rowers in curriculum time
Extra Curriculum Rower Usage;
- 42% of schools report having a rowing club.
- 57% of schools report that their staff also make use of the rowing machines.
- 21% of schools report that they have community use of the rowing machines.
Secondary School Data (Years 7-13)
- 100% of HOB schools have taken part in the rowing machines for schools initiative, and out of a population of around 14825 students it is estimated that approximately 9191 students are using the machines.
Based on a sample schools;
- 62% of students have used the rowers.
- The average length of time students are using the rowers for is 8 minutes and there has been around 6 rowing sessions per term.
- 64% of year groups are using the rowers in curriculum time
- 18% of schools have reported using the schools across the curriculum.
Extra Curriculum Rower Usage;
- 25% of schools report having a rowing club.
- Currently, there is no report of staff using the rowers.
- 60% of schools report that they have community use of the rowing machines.
Thank you to those schools that returned their January 2006 to August 2007 evaluations. Please don't forget to return the August 2007 to January 2008 evaluations. This evaluation helps us to identify areas of good practice and provide those schools that need it with extra support with indoor rowing.
