This report provides an evaluation of the Rowers in Schools project a year after it began in nineteen secondary schools in North East Essex in February 2009. The Pilgrim Centre's aim is to use sport to motivate pupils aged 9 - 14 who are struggling with their study or who have become disillusioned by traditional learning styles. The centre has developed a healthy living session which incorporates physical exercise linked with ICT applications. We identified Concept2 rowing machines and RowPro software as meeting these needs and delivering a wow factor. The Teaching Primary Care Trust in the Heart of Birmingham area put machines into primary and secondary schools in the Birmingham area with the aim of raising awareness of fitness and tackling obesity with pupils from a young age. The club offers children, aged 9-11, a structured indoor rowing experience and 'healthy lifestyle' coaching. We have had fantastic success with some of our targeted pupils, in particular those pupils identified as 'over weight'. By introducing them to indoor rowing as part of a balanced programme of 'healthy living', we have successfully and significantly improved their 'wellbeing'. - Frankley Community High School
Frankley Community High School situated on the outskirts of Birmingham is a relatively small school with just under 500 pupils on register ranging from years 7-11.
