We organise an event called 'Race the Sun' which is the result of a member of our PE department entering the Action Medical Research sponsored event which challenges teams to Run, Canoe and Cycle as far as they can during the hours of daylight.

We adapted the triathlon challenge to suit a school event and it has worked brilliantly for the last 3 years.

We hire 20 indoor rowing machines from Concept2 which are crucial to the event.

The children work in teams of 4 on a relay basis. With each discipline lasting 45 minutes, the team which gets the furthest wins!

Each team Rows first, then switches to Cycling around a measured track (for which they bring a bike for their team). After the cycle leg they Run as a relay team.

This year the winners were a team of four 12 year old boys from Year 8 who recorded a total distance of nearly 44km in total.

Having 20 rowing machines mens we can accommodate 20 teams in each of the first three years in school, so we have a potential of 60 teams taking place each year.

This year was, in fact, a little disappointing with only 30 teams (120 children) taking part. Last year, however, we had a full event and raised over £1500!

This has become an established event on our PE Calendar and we hope to be back up to usual numbers next year.
