How one Competition Manager has rolled out indoor rowing across one SSP.
This is a breakdown of how Kim Lillie, Competition Manager for Leicestershire & Rutland, covering South Charnwood, Melton & Belvoir and Rutland SSPs has overcome a few hurdles in order to roll out indoor rowing across one of her SSPs
- Concept2 led training was offered across the county for teachers to attend
- My rural Melton schools couldn't attend the Concept2 training so I decided to deliver some myself.
- I offered 3 hour long workshops for my SSP teachers to attend locally within one of their schools.
- I made sure I looked through all the training resources given by Concept2 and their website to ensure that the workshops were NOT soley about competition, and more about engaging curriculum use.
- My workshops included information on the following:
- Understanding the PM4 monitors
- Rowing technique (using the concept2 technique dvd, and the demonstration on the PM4 monitor)
- Basic rowing practices - getting participants in time, error spotting and corrections etc.
- Practical applications within lessons e.g. quick set up methods (wireless linking of rowers)
- Various lesson uses so the students don't get bored (circuits, games, training)
- Using new technology (logcard system, heartrate monitors)
- Links to curriclum for GCSE/A level students (using heart rate monitors to work out the types of training the participant is doing e.g interval, continuous...)
- Games for end of lessons/rewards for behaviour (fishing, darts, golf...)
- Setting up rowers with wires and using the venue racer software for compeitions.
- Relay races - frantic changeovers etc.
- I provided each PE department that attended with ethernet cables, heart rate monitors, rowing machine logcards and a lesson resource pack.
- PE teachers that attended were asked to filter information back to their respective department members that could not make it.
- All training was performed well in advance of their SSP level competition.
- Winners from the SSP competition went on to represent at the Inter-SSP competition and one team has now made it through to Regional Competition.
- Within schools, indoor rower use has not stopped at all! Schools use them frequently during lessons times, and all the time when it is bad weather or they don't have use of their hall (e.g. exam times) - because they can be set up in any room, even where space is limited.
- SSCo's within two of the four secondary schools have now shared their rowers (they have 4 each) and offered competitions for their feeder primary schools using all 8 rowing machines.
- One Head of Department has also used them on a fundraiser day, and another is looking to do the same with Sport Relief coming soon!
