Those who find themselves "craving stodge over plates of salad" this winter should not deny themselves comfort food - but instead make sure they opt for healthy options, according to Zest magazine.
"Everyone knows that a balanced diet and regular fitness training are essential for weight loss and general health, but many winter warmers are great ways to help you get your five-a-day," said Mandie Gower, editor of the publication.
Home-made soups, stews and pasta sauces can all be packed full of vegetables and protein-rich pulses, she explained.
Ms Gower recommended starting the day with porridge to "provide you with slow release energy" and snacking on seeds and nuts to "give your mood and energy levels a kick-start".
She went on to give her tips for boosting your immune system, explaining that a varied and balanced diet with lots of fruit and veg keeps people fighting fit.
Ms Gower also advised eating ginger and garlic to fight off colds and flu, because "garlic helps kill off infections while ginger will stimulate your blood flow and circulation".
