It is common for a daily fitness training regime get derailed during winter, as cold days and dark nights make it harder to leave the comfort of home.
However, Dr Tony Breitbach, director of athletic training education at Saint Louis University, has some tips to help keep up your daily routines.
"As temperatures get colder, it's important for athletes to adjust their routines," Dr Breitbach explains.
He advises people to vary their routine. Activities like swimming and running in the park may not be options in the winter, but good alternatives include ice-skating, indoor rowing or a yoga class.
Anyone exercising outside should dress in layers, with clothing closest to your skin made of breathable wicking material, Dr Breitbach says.
Avoid cotton, which retains sweat. Add a thermal layer of fleece or cotton to keep in heat, and use a third, outer layer as a cover.
He also advises runners to wear light-coloured, reflective clothing when out after dark to ensure they are seen by drivers.
Those who play court sports like basketball and racquetball should switch to shoes with good traction to help avoid collisions and avoid ankle injuries, Dr Breitbach adds.
It is all too easy to over-indulge in rich foods and sugary desserts over the festive season, so it is a good idea to step up a workout to compensate.
Dr Breitbach advises staying well-hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids and being sure to avoid caffeine and alcohol-based beverages, which lead to dehydration.
Lastly, motivation is a key factor in maintaining fitness levels during winter. Try taking part in competitions, such as round four of the Concept2 Challenge Series, which takes place in a number of UK locations on January 1st and challenges participants to row 5,000 metres as fast as they can.
What better way is there to kickstart the new year?
