Schools League Smashes Records
Posted by Concept2 News on the 5th of October 2007
A record 1,423 teams, involving more than 7,300 pupils, teachers and parents, have entered the first round of the Concept2 Schools Indoor Rowing League. That’s an increase of more than 50 per cent on last year.
Entries, which closed on October 1, included 389 eights and 1,034 fours. Teams, drawn from both state and independent sectors, come from as far afield as Jersey and the Isle of Mull.
Each youngster in years 6 to 9 had to row 125m in relay format on one Concept2. The eights raced 1,000m, and the fours 500m. Teams consisting of pupils from years 10 and above - and those made up of parents and teachers – raced double the distance, 250m.
Outstanding times were set in the fours, where events were new. In addition ten of the sixteen eights records were eclipsed.
John Wilson, Concept2 director, said: "The Schools League is proving to be a phenomenal success. What is particularly exciting is the age range of participation - from 10 year olds through to teachers and parents - and the geographic scope of the competition. All the signs are that the League is engaging young and old alike."
There are six rounds to the league, three in the autumn term and three after Christmas. Schools have a month to complete each challenge and entries for round 2 close on November 5. To find out more and see the full results and records visit http://www.therowingcompany.com/league
