Motivation tips for winter fitness training

The winter chill can severely hamper motivation when it comes to exercise, even for those hoping to kickstart 2010 with a brand new fitness training programme.
However research from the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) provides a few tips for staying resolute on fitness resolutions.
Plan ahead, says the college. The holidays can be stressful, but finding time for just 30 minutes of physical activity a day can ease the angst, according to a study in ACSM's official journal, Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise.
Secondly, people are encouraged to exercise in short bouts to prevent that 'burnt out' feeling. Researchers found those who exercised in three, ten-minute segments per day were more likely to stay physically active than those who exercised continuously for 30 minutes.
Lastly, entering competitions will give people something to aim for, says the ACSM, who advise checking local health clubs for forthcoming contests.
The indoor rowing race season runs, roughly, from September through to March.
Upcoming events include the Scottish Indoor Rowing Championship in Edinburgh on January 31st and the English IRC in Manchester on February 21st.
