Metabolism weight loss myths busted

Posted by Concept2 News on the 9th of November 2009

Those who struggle to lose weight often blame a slow metabolism, but that and a few other weight loss myths have been busted by diet doctor and nutritionist Dr Susan Roberts.

Writing in the Daily Mail, Dr Susan Roberts says that while metabolic rates do vary between individuals, it would only be the calorie equivalent of a small latte.

And most people who appear to eat what they like without putting on weight tend to cut back other meals and snacks to make up for the odd indulgence, Dr Roberts adds.

Similarly, while it is often quoted that men have a higher metabolism than women, Dr Roberts asserts that the difference is minimal and does not protect them against weight gain.

A balanced diet and regular fitness training remain the best way to stay in shape.

Personal trainer Rich Leigh warns that while crash dieting will lower your metabolism, through healthy eating and exercise most people can expect to lose between two and four pounds a week.
