Lack of exercise 'can make snoring worse'

Posted by Concept2 News on the 14th of December 2009

A lack of exercise - and the weight gain that can result - can make snoring worse, according to the British Snoring and Sleep Apnoea Association (BSSAA).

Overeating and lack of exercise leads to an increase in fatty tissue around the throat, explained a BSSAA spokesperson, which squeezes the airway and prevents air from flowing in and out freely, resulting in snoring.

The BSSAA notes that excess body fat seems to be more of a problem for men than women, who tend to put on weight around their thighs rather than their necks and waists.

This means that women are less likely to snore than men.
"Being overweight by just a few kilograms can be the cause of snoring", said the spokesperson.

To lose weight and help prevent snoring people should take regular fitness training and be sure to eat a healthy, balanced diet.

People who are overweight have an increased risk of developing diabetes, heart disease and gallstones, according to the NHS.
