Lack of exercise 'can cause poor eyesight'

A lack of fitness training is among the lifestyle factors which pose a serious threat to eyesight, according to new research.
To mark National Eye Week, which runs from November 9th to 15th, sight charity the Eyecare Trust has joined forces with healthcare provider Simplyhealth to raise awareness of the eye health risks associated with certain lifestyle choices.
The trust encourages around 30 minutes of exercise five times a week, claiming that regular exercise increases the oxygen supply to the retina and optic nerve, as well as lowering the pressure which builds up in the eye.
Reducing this interocular pressure can also help control conditions such as glaucoma and ocular hypertension, the body adds.
Other eyesight risks highlighted by the trust include obesity, smoking, a poor diet and excessive alcohol consumption.
Iain Anderson, chairman of the Eyecare Trust, said there was growing evidence that lifestyle factors played a significant role in determining the long-term health of our eyes.
However, he added, it is never too late to make changes.
"In some instances vision that is already in decline can be restored by taking regular exercise, following a healthy diet, and cutting down on cigarettes and alcohol," he said.
