An indoor rowing machine is the piece of fitness equipment which offers the "most bang for your buck", according to a weight training expert.
Steven Bubel, speaking to the online magazine My San Antonio Life, said the row machine takes the prize for the most muscle mass used, utilising around 25 per cent more than lower-body dominant machines such as bikes and treadmills.
"For instance, intervals done on an elliptical will be more effective than walking on a treadmill," he said.
Row training works a wide range of muscle groups, making it a fantastic calorie burner as well as good at developing flexibility and strength.
It is also has a low impact on joints, making it ideal for anyone with knee or hip problems.
Mr Bubel also offers advice for anyone with an interest in weight and cardiovascular training.
He states that while is it generally best to stretch after using a cardio machine when your tissue is warm and less resistant to stretch, if you have muscular imbalances that affect your gait such as tight hamstrings then it is in your best interests to stretch both before and after your workout.
Effort is also an important part of seeing lasting results from fitness training, he explained. "When it comes right down to it, the effectiveness of any routine is about application."
