Exercise 'reduces male stroke risk'

Posted by Concept2 News on the 24th of November 2009

Vigorous exercise can help prevent strokes in men, new research reveals.

Studies carried out by Columbia University and published in scientific journal Neurology show that men taking part in high-intensity exercise had a stroke risk of 2.75 per cent compared with a 4.6 danger among non-active individuals.

The research showed no benefit was gained from light intensity exercise such as playing golf or walking and that exercise of any type had no effect on women's risk of stroke.

Study leader Dr Joshua Willey commented: "Taking part in moderate-to-heavy intensity physical activity may be an important factor in preventing stroke."

He added that identifying ways to improve physical activity among elderly people living in built-up areas could be a key goal for public health.

Earlier this month, the World Cancer Research Fund stated that around 80,000 cases of cancer could be prevented every year if people took more exercise and maintained a healthy diet.
