Evesham IRC 2009

The Evesham Golden Mile took place once again at Evesham Rowing Club on July 12th. Last weekend's event was its 9th Year and over 200 indoor rowers from around the country and one from Bavaria, Germany took part. The competitors ranged in age from School Year 7 to 98 years old.
6 British records were set - meaning that more than half of the 30 available current GB records have been set at the Evesham event.
The most notable record is perhaps the new 90-99 year old Lightweight best set by John Hodgson (pic attached) . The nearly 99 year old, El Alamein and D-Day veteran, completed the mile in 9 minutes 41 seconds. Outstanding!
Evesham RC's own Aimee Rutherford, though only 16, eclipsed the Women's under 18 lightweight (under 61kg) record by 8 seconds - finishing on 6 minutes 21 sec. She is clearly capable of further lowering this time.
Other GB records went to: * Andrew Hammond in the lightweight J18 beating the previous record by exactly 1 second. * Roger Bangay in the lightweight 70-79 year old event, beating the old GB best by 15 seconds * Rhian Jinny-Jones in the Women's 19-29 Lightweight division, beating the old GB best by 7 seconds * Xavier Parker rowed a new GB best in the 2 minute School Year 7 category - covering a staggering 585 metres - 1 metre better than the previous record.
The 2009 Golden Mile also saw some adaptive (disabled) Indoor rowers competing for the first time. ERC's Scott Ballard-Ridley smashed his PB and the one-legged Gerry Hunt was cheered to the rafters in 70-79 adaptive event.
Mark Dewdney club Deputy Chairman commented "Its not the records that was the most impressive thing on the day it was how all the rowers supported each other; cheering each other home."
