Those planning to lose weight in the New Year need to commit to a change of lifestyle, according to the British Dietetic Association (BDA).
"You need to think about it [losing weight] on a more permanent basis," said Ladan Hajihassani, a dietician at Worcestershire Royal Hospital.
Ms Hajihassani, who is also a member of the BDA, said the best way to shed the pounds is healthy eating and regular fitness training.
"There are a few ways of dealing with it," she advised, "but the best way obviously is eating less and moving more."
Ms Hajihassani went on to say that snacking could be part of a successful diet, "as long as you choose healthier snacks like fruit".
She went on to recommend snacking on sensible portions of vegetable crudites, dry fruit and nuts.
According to a recent survey by Herbalife, ladies who slim down for the festive season in time for Christmas parties on average go on to regain seven pounds over the season.
