Chester dig deeps to help Children In Need

Posted by Concept2 News on the 27th of November 2012

If you are a regular follower of this blog then you will know that Concept2 recently helped support a 12 hour rowing event in aid of Children in Need held at Chester University.

HUNDREDS of volunteers took part in a special 12-hour 'Rowathon' in aid of Children In Need.

Throughout the day fundraisers turned up in their droves to the University of Chester sports hall to take part and show their support for the cause.

The event, which included rowing teams from across Cheshire, was aiming to raise thousands of pounds for the children's charity, with the banking group Santander promising to match anything that the fundraising efforts of the rowathon and Student's Union make.

Gordon Reay, students' sports development, performance and coaching manager and one of the event organisers, said: "We've been delighted to host this 12-hour rowathon for Children in Need.

"About 500 rowers and volunteers have got involved and I'm really pleased with the enthusiasm of all those who have turned out to support this event.

"They've put their bodies and minds to the test for a great cause. Well done to everyone involved."

The rowing machines were donated to the event by manufacturers Concept2, with the rowing stations allocated to specific teams for the duration of the 12 hours.

Director of corporate communications for the university, Jayne Dodgson, said: "There has been a great atmosphere and the place was heaving all day.

"We even had one lady who came all the way from Bridgend with her partner to take part in the event on her birthday.

"She said she was asked what she wanted to do for her birthday and she said come up to Chester and take part in this event for Children In Need.

"That is the kind of spirit that makes it such a special event."

The event was a great success raising over £11,500.
