British Universities Rowing captures centre stage
Posted by Concept2 News on the 19th of September 2007
The Concept2 supported British Universities Rowing team collected a tremendous 16 medals at the 3rd European Universities (EUSA) Rowing Championships held on the Olympic Rowing Course in Banyoles, Spain. Rowing is now the biggest and most competitive of the EUSA sports, with over 300 athletes from over 60 universities participating in what is effectively the "Champions League" for University Rowing. Athletes are chosen on the results of their national championships and race at EUSA for their University and their nation, many athletes having already had experience at World Cup, Under 23 and Senior Worlds.
The British team featured athletes from 13 universities, with large contingents from Newcastle, Durham and Birmingham. The Bristol Mens Four excelled in picking up a very hard-fought Gold medal against an all-international German crew, whilst the Birmingham Ladies Four were rewarded for their hard work in switching from a coxed to a coxless boat over the summer by taking a magnificent silver ahead of crews containing several athletes from the World and the Under 23 Championships.
Despite the late-removal of some key athletes by the national governing body the BUR GB team still collected four Gold, four Silver and eight Bronze medals to make it the most successful British rowing team of the year, beating an international-packed German team to the overall EUSA Salver by just seven points, a credit to all the athletes, coaches and the management team in managing to retain the overall EUSA trophy for a third year against federation-supported, highly experienced teams.
The 2008 EUSA Rowing Championships will be held in Zagreb, Croatia in late August, just ahead of the FISU World University Rowing Championships in Belgrade, so the pressure will be on to ensure that all our lead student athletes are able to help GB defend our position on top of the university rowing table.
