Me And My Rower

Posted by Concept2 News on the 25th of November 2003

This issue's Me And My Rower is by Kevin Silverthorn of Hampshire and is one of our favourites so far. If you've got a story about, well, you and your Rower, send it to editor@therowingcompany.com. I went out to the shed the other week to do my usual Wednesday 10,000m on the Indoor Rower. As I went out I said to my wife, 'see you in about 45 minutes'. I finished my row and went to leave the shed - but I couldn't get out. The latch on the outside must have dropped down! I rattled the door loudly for about five minutes, thinking my wife or someone would hear - no luck. So I did my cooling down stretches for about 10-15 minutes thinking that eventually my wife would come out to the shed. Then I thought that I could bash the door out, but it'll probably split the wood and I'll end up having to repair it at the weekend. Anyway, she's bound to remember me soon! The gas in the lantern ran out but I had a torch. So I just sat there sweaty and knackered with the torch battery running out and it getting darker and darker. My wife then thought she'd better check on me. As she walked down the garden she couldn't see any light from the shed and it was silent. In the few seconds it took to walk down the garden she'd convinced herself that I'd had a heart attack and had probably been dead for at least 15-20 minutes. She was already thinking how to tell the kids. She wasn't even going to go into the shed thinking, what's the point?, she's just going to see me lying there cold. Fortunately, however, she said 'Kevin' and I replied 'let me out!' I'm sure she felt like punching me for giving her such a scare but she gave me a hug instead. It sounds like an episode from a dodgy sitcom but this is how it really happened.
