Bbc Three: Hercules

A brand new 12-week Saturday night series will blend fitness with legend in an attempt to find the country's fittest person.Hercules begins on BBC3 next month and features 12 athletes competing in 12 endurance sports – including indoor rowing – to find the ultimate hero. Each week the competitors will take part in a different task and after each the weakest player will be eliminated. Filmed in the grounds of Heartland Abbey in Dorset, the programme was apparently designed to replicate ancient Greece and the same conditions faced by Hercules during his 12 labours. Which we're guessing means they'll be wearing togas. Anyway, each story is inspired by Greek mythology, including 'Ixion's Wheel', where contestants run the equivalent of a marathon uphill with a giant wheel, and the 'Torments of Theseus', where challengers are submerged within giant tanks of water and forced to hold their breath for as long as possible. The 'Challenge of Hercules' involves using specially adapted Concept 2 Indoor Rowers to row 70 kilometres. To keep up the Grecian theme, the Indoor Rowers were placed inside Greek galleons and adapted to include oars. The series starts on BBC Three on Saturday November 8th, and the 'Challenge of Hercules' episode featuring the Indoor Rower will be broadcast on Saturday, 13th December.
