Dave Toseland, Alcester Grammar School: Following the participation of several pupils from Alcester Grammar School at the BIRC last November, the PE department there received a phone call from nearby Warwick School, which was also represented at the National Indoor Arena, suggesting the possibility of an indoor match between the two schools. As a result, on May 13th and May 15th a total of 24 students from each school took part in an inter-school indoor rowing match. Eight pupils from each of Years 7, 8 & 9 (11 to 14 years) competed over either 2000 metres or 500 metres. Four rowing the longer distance and four rowing the sprint race, the competition was concluded with a team race with all eight rowing in a 4000 metres relay, each boy or girl (Alcester had mixed teams!) pulling about 20 strokes at a time, great fun!Points were awarded according to finishing position, eight for first down to one for eighth. In the team race five points were given for every 15 seconds a team finished ahead. The whole competition was hugely enjoyable for both staff and students, many of whom achieved personal bests. Results were as follows:Year 7 (Under 12)2000 metres1 Tom Cooper-Cocks (Warwick) 8:49.32 Sam Allen (Alcester) 8:55.23 Georgina Kerr (Alcester ) 8:59.24 Grant Barker (Warwick) 8:59.95 Rebecca England (Alcester ) 9:05.96 Mike Slater (Alcester ) 9:14.57 Oliver Malpass (Warwick) 9:23.88 Steven Ewell (Warwick) 9:33.1 500 metres1 Chris Leadbetter (Warwick) 1:58.02 Tim Morton (Alcester ) 2:05.63 Georgina Mason (Warwick) 2:06.74 Lawrence Bywater (Warwick) 2:09.85 Rory Sullivan (Alcester) 2:12.66 Guy Gilleard (Warwick) 2:13.27 Anthony Yates (Alcester) 2:14.78 Alex Paxton (Warwick) 2:16.44000 metre Team Sprint1 Alcester 16:46.62 Warwick 16:59.4Result1 Alcester 44 points2 Warwick 33 points
