Be A Grand Prix Driver

Posted by Concept2 News on the 16th of June 2003

An old friend of Concept 2, Bernie Shrosbree, made quite an impact recently as the fitness guru on Channel 5's Be A Grand Prix Driver competition.Bernie was charged with pushing the competition entrants to their limits physically in the programme's search for a star of tomorrow. Shrosbree, now working as a human performance consultant for the team that manages Jenson Button - Essentially Sport, put the hopefuls through a gruelling series of gym tests and a workout on the Concept 2 DYNO. As the field was whittled down, Bernie then resorted to the Indoor Rower - or 'machine of truth' as he likes to call it - to reduce numbers down to the final select group. After that it was down to a test session in a 1985 Tyrrell around the historic Monza track and it was youngster Mark Johnston from Northern Ireland who emerged as the winner, securing a drive in the Thoroughbred Grand Prix race at the circuit the weekend after his first test there, and a contract with Essentially Sport. And he didn't disappoint – scything through the field from 28th and last on the grid to a very impressive eighth place and class victory. Both Mark, and runner up Neil Purdie, who excelled in the gym tests, look to have secured drives in British racing teams for the rest of the year.
