2012 GB Rowing Squad Selection

Posted by Concept2 News on the 1st of March 2012

Since August of last year we have been following Greg Searle's progress towards the London 2012 Olympics. In the build up we have tracked the highs and lows of his training through a video diary. Now it is almost crunch time, with the squad being whittled down to the 14 athletes who will make up the men's sweep team.

The process of selection will be recorded through an on-line TV series following Greg and the rest of the team, the series will follow the training camps, competitive trials and the everyday lives of the coaches and the rowers as they endure the quest for selection.

THE SQUAD is a 12 week web series following the GB Rowing Team mens' sweep squad through winter training as they aim to secure a seat for London 2012. The 16 part series includes an exploration of the selection dilemmas facing coach Jürgen Grobler, profiles the international stars and young hopefuls in the men's sweep squad, and covers the GB Rowing Team Senior Trials in March which pit athletes against each other in the race for selection.

The twice-weekly web broadcasts, started on the 21st February and concludes on the 4th April 2012 with the announcement by The GB Rowing Team of the crews for the Pair, the Four and the Eight boats.

Great Britain currently has the most powerful rowing team in the world. They topped the medal table at Beijing 2008, and are strong favourites to shine at London 2012.

With just months to go, however, the heavyweight men's squad - including Beijing Olympic gold medallists like Andy Triggs Hodge, Pete Reed and Tom James - are still in the dark as to which athletes will be selected for which boat for the Olympics. The winter trials continue, and all the contenders have just a few short weeks to make their case. That's how Men's Chief Coach Jürgen Grobler likes it: a squad of 18 fiercely competitive athletes fighting it out for the last remaining 14 seats for the Olympics.

"There is never a name on the seat. Even the top guys, from Pinsent and Redgrave onwards, always had to earn their seats. So now I've got to prove myself, to say to Jürgen: "This is where I am, this is where I stand in the team. I want that seat." - Andrew Triggs Hodge, Gold Medal, Beijing 2008

Grobler has a strong hand to play. At the 2011 World Championships, all three of his GB crews won medals: the Pair (silver), the Four (gold) and the Eight (silver). But Grobler was not satisfied with his haul. He does not prepare his top crews to win silver; he wants gold. And to achieve his target of two gold medals this summer, he has to get his key selection decisions right.

"They have to find - physically, technically, and mentally - that little bit extra to be more competitive. I know there is a lot of potential there. They just have to show they can do it." - Jürgen Grobler, Men's Chief Coach, GB Rowing Team
