Think back to September 2000 when the nation stayed up to watch Sir Steve Redgrave win his record breaking fifth Olympic gold medal. It was an amazing race to watch with more than one or two of us losing our voices cheering him on.
In Sydney, Team GB won 55 individual medals, including 13 gold medals for rowing. One of those went to Steve Trapmore, the inspired stroke in the triumphant men's eight. "I felt euphoric when I crossed the finish line in Sydney. I'd been focussing on that one race for four years and to win it was amazing. It wasn't until much later though that the realisation of the event and what it means really sank in," he recalled.
Four years on Steve is no longer racing competitively but still trains regularly on the Concept 2 Indoor Rower. Over the last eight years he has won impressive gold, silver and bronze medals from the World Rowing Championships alongside his Olympic gold. It was after winning his gold medal at the 2002 World Rowing Championship that he suffered two semi-prolapsed disks that forced him to retire from international rowing.
He puts the injury down to general wear and tear on his body and poor physio routines early in his rowing career. Now he's using the Concept 2 Indoor Rower to help him maintain his posture and get him back into training. "The Indoor Rower is ideal for rowers because it directly relates to water training, but as an all round fitness machine it is second to none," Steve explained.
"I know athletes in all different situations and sports that use it and always want to compare scores! It was an essential tool in my training schedule. It gives crucial individual performance indications for training and testing. Now it's a great way to keep myself in shape."
The Indoor Rower is used by many for rehabilitation as well as general training. It provides a zero impact workout that will not only enhance your basic fitness but also help with strength training and specific training to help recovery from injury.
The Concept 2 Indoor Rower is the most widely used rowing machine in the world and is arguably used by every current international rower. The machine has more than proved its worth within the rowing community and it's likely it will be an integral part of many of our future Olympic gold medal rowers' training sessions in years to come.
